Sometimes only a sustained spell on a stunning beach can cure your ailing limbs and recharge your batteries. Beaches can be all things to all people; whether you want a chance to while away a day with a good book in the sunshine, party all day long or sit in awe at the natural beauty in front of you. If a sun, sea and sand break is exactly what the doctor ordered, then check out our favourite beaches from our top European escapes:

France

Many sun-seekers set sail for the South of France for the finest beaches, with the likes of Antibes, Cannes and Nice offering cosmopolitan glamour, guaranteed sunshine and miles of beachfront. However, just a short hop on the train in the direction of Monaco from Nice, leads you to the stunning Villefranche-Sur-Mer, which offers a beautiful beach delivering stunning views of the coastline rising above you and incredible yachts out to sea.

Portugal

Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, the Algarve is potentially the most instantly-recognisable asset which offers travellers a sun-drenched holiday to remember. As far as idyllic beaches go, it has some awe-inspiring options for exploration. One that sticks out is Praia da Benagil, which you will find backed by epic sandstone cliffs, lined with glorious white sand and serving up awe-inspiring sea caves to explore on foot or by kayak.

Croatia

Game of Thrones fever has made Dubrovnik one of the busiest tourist cities in the world, but you have to set sail to find the best beaches. Seek out a ship heading to the island of Lopud, and Sunji Beach, where you’ll find a spectacular coved beach awaiting you. You’ll have to hike from the drop-off or pay for a lift on a golf caddie from a local. Lopud can form part of a day trip around the Elaphiti Islands, where you can enjoy a delectable lunch of grilled fish and plenty of vino.

Italy

Some of the most seductive beaches that Italy has to offer can be found in Sardinia. Among them is Spiaggia di Tuerredda, a short but sweet stretch of sand which is beautifully-sheltered from the wind. Renowned as one of top snorkelling locations in the region, there is plenty to keep you busy on your visit. Explorers are in luck too with the stunning little island of Isola di Tuerredda just a short swim off the coast.

Ibiza

Arguably the most popular party island in the world, Ibiza is synonymous with letting your hair down in spectacular style. If you want a party beach then head to Las Salinas, where you can explore an extensive line-up of bars proliferated with beautiful people. If you want an afternoon off then you can disappear to and soak up the Balearic Island’s legendary sunshine at Cala Xuclar, a real hidden gem taking you back to a time before the tourists took over.
